Zachary Richardson was the luckiest boy in Austin, Texas! He found a time machine. Chase, Jonathan, and Clay climbed inside and watched as Zach pressed a button. Blue fog swirled around them. A man appeared and said, "Professor Emit is my name. That's time spelled backwards, and history is my game."

Page 4

"We'll visit famous people in history," the Professor said to Zach. He set the machine to 1492. "Do you know what happened in 1492? Columbus landed his ships in the New World. People thought the world was flat, and that Columbus would fall off if he sailed too far."

Page 5

"But Columbus knew the world was round," Zach added. "He was a fearless explorer," Chase told Zach. "Now we'll visit a good friend," the Professor said. "Ready, Time Travelers?" "Yes!" they yelled. The Professor set the date to 1608.

"There is the Native-American princess, Pocahontas," said Professor Emit. "What did she do?" Zach asked. "Pocahontas made peace between Captain John Smith and her tribe. She saved the city of Jamestown, the first English settlement."

Page 7

"After the Chief captured John Smith, Pocahontas rushed in and saved him. She helped her tribe and the people of Jamestown make friends." "She was a brave peacemaker," said Zach. "Now, may we visit a famous inventor?" Professor Emit smiled and set the time to 1752.

Page 8

That's Ben Franklin!" Zach said. "He's doing his famous experiment with the kite and key." "Correct, Zach," said the Professor. "He proved that lightning is electricity. He also started America's first public library and fire department."

Page 9

"He was a genius," said Zach. "Yes, the Professor agreed. "Now we'll meet two brothers who showed great determination." Chase, Jonathan, and Clay wondered with Zach who they could be. The Professor set the time machine for 1903.

The Time Travelers landed on a windy beach where two men were preparing to fly an airplane. A sign read "Kitty Hawk." That's Orville and Wilbur Wright, the brothers who built and flew the first airplane," said Zach. "Correct!" said Professor Emit.

Page 11

"That was hard work," said Zach. "Yes," the Professor said. People thought it couldn't be done, but the Wright Brothers kept trying." Zach imagined flying, too. "Now," said the Professor, "we'll visit a time when people learned about respecting each other." The time machine flashed to 1963.

They landed on a crowded street. A man spoke into a microphone. "I have a dream," he said. "He's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

Zach shouted along with Chase, Jonathan, and Clay. "Dr. King dreamed of a day when people would treat each other as equals," the Professor said.

Page 13

"He won the Nobel Peace Prize and taught us that all people deserve respect." "A truly great man," they agreed. "Time for one more stop," said the Professor. "Let's try something far out!" Zach said. The Professor winked and set the clock for 1969.

Shooting stars flashed by. On the moon, Chase, Jonathan, and Clay watched an astronaut climb out of a spaceship. He said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." "Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon!" shouted Zach.

Page 15

Zach jumped off "That's a big step for me, too!" he said. "Yippee!" yelled Chase, jumping over a crater. "It takes courage to do something that's never been done before," said the Professor. It was time to go. Professor Emit set the machine. Presto! They were back home in Austin, Texas.

Page 16

"Did you like traveling through time and meeting famous people?" asked Professor Emit. "Yes!" they said. But they were glad to be back home, too. "Remember, YOU will make the difference in the future," said the Professor.

Page 17

"That's true," said Zach. "We might be famous some day. Maybe we'll be in history books, too." "It's amazing what people can accomplish when they try," said the Professor.

Page 18

"Got to go now," said Professor Emit, "but I'll be back." As he disappeared in a swirl of blue fog, Zach said to Chase, Jonathan, and Clay, "Yes! We can change the world if we try."
