"Austin needs your help," the coach told Zachary Richardson. "We want to raise money to build a new city playground by holding six sporting events. Will you be captain of the Home Team, Zachary?" Zachary felt honored. He smiled and said, "You bet! Saxon, Kevin and Jake can be on my team, too."

Baseball was the first event. The game was scoreless in the bottom of the eighth. The Home Team was up to bat. Spectators cheered for Zachary and the Home Team as he hit the ball into the bleachers for a home run.

At the top of the ninth inning, Zachary was pitching. He struck out the first batter. A short fly ball was caught for the second out. Saxon tagged a runner at second base for the final out. The coach shouted, "The Home Team wins!" Zachary gave his teammates a thumbs-up.

The teams changed their uniforms and hurried onto the basketball court. The stands were filled. Zachary and his other teammates ran up and down the court. "You're fantastic," the coach said as the Home Team scored again and again.

After being fouled, Zachary stood at the free throw line, aimed the ball, and shot. Everyone cheered as it sank into the net. The second shot rolled around the rim. The buzzer sounded as the ball fell through the net. The Home Team won!

Zachary and Saxon, Kevin and Jake huddled on the football field for the next event. "The Visitors are a good team. Let's do our best," Zachary said. At the end of the fourth quarter, the coach said, "Zachary, we need a touchdown to win."

The ball was snapped. Zachary faded back to throw a pass. Instead, he clutched the ball, ducked between two Visitor linebackers, and ran twenty yards into the end zone. The crowd went wild. "Touchdown! Hurray, Home Team!"

The teams ran to the soccer field. Spectators crowded the grandstands. "Keep that ball moving!" Coach yelled as the players kicked the ball down the field. "Look out! The Visitors are going for a goal."

For a moment, the ball moved between players. Seeing a chance, Saxon took the ball and passed it to Zachary, who kicked it hard. It sailed over the Visitors' heads. "Way to go, Zachary!" screamed the crowd as the Home Team scored the winning goal.

Both teams then moved to the tennis courts for a tournament. The crowd watched in hushed excitement as a Home Team player served the ball. Rackets swung as servers and receivers hit the ball back and forth over the net.

Near the end of the final match, the score came down to a tie. At match point, the captain of the Home Team gripped the racket. Smack! The tie breaker was won. The Home Team jumped over the net to thank the Visitors for a great tournament.

The two teams moved to the volleyball event. Zachary set up the ball to a teammate, who spiked it into the Visitors' court. Spectators applauded as the Home Team scored.

A player from the Visitors' team passed the ball to his teammate, who smashed it over the net. Zachary was ready. With his open hand, he returned the ball over the net to score the winning point.

The crowd applauded as the Home and Visitor teams shook hands. Coach said, "Congratulations! The Home team won, but both teams did their best. More importantly, we raised enough money for a new playground."

Page 17

Zachary imagined how nice the new playground would look. He thought of the many different sports they could play there. All members of both teams would be proud of the addition to the neighborhood.

Coach smiled as he told the members of both teams, "Thanks to your great participation, we all will have a new playground to enjoy. Each and every one of you is a special part of this community.
