Bethany Richardson said good night to Sam, Bryce and Benjamin. It was Christmas Eve! "I hope Santa comes to Austin," she said. Then Beth drifted off to sleep, happy that the next morning would be Christmas.
Page 4
Beth had heard the weatherman on TV say that the North Pole was having a terrible snowstorm. Santa had a late start. It looked like he would not get all the presents out on Christmas Eve.
Page 5
Suddenly there was a bright red glow outside. It woke Beth up. It was Santa's red-nosed reindeer! "We need help," he said. "You heard about the storm. Santa wants to know if you will help us."
Page 6
Beth replied, "Of course, I will help Santa Claus." Beth found it easy to see the way to Santa's sleigh. The reindeer's red nose was like a lantern.
Page 7
"Will you read the map and drive the sleigh for me?" Santa asked Beth. "The reindeer and I will help you learn to drive. With your help, there may be just enough time left."
Page 8
"I would love to help," said Beth. Santa handed her the reins and said, "We must hurry." They left Austin and headed for the next town. Beth was getting the hang of driving the big sleigh.
Page 9
Beth thought, "Sam, Bryce and Benjamin will never believe this. I'm actually helping Santa Claus deliver presents. Beth skillfully landed on each roof and handed the presents to Santa.
Page 10
It was something to see chubby Santa climb down all those tiny chimneys and carry so many presents. The chimneys looked too small for Santa, but he went down them as quick as a wink. Beth and Santa really worked fast! They made a good team.
Page 11
Santa said, "Beth, you have been good all year. I knew I could count on you. Without your help a lot of boys and girls would not get presents tomorrow morning."
Page 12
Santa, Beth and the reindeer went from town to town, all around the world. London. Paris, Hong Kong. - They went everywhere. How could the sleigh hold so many presents?
Page 13
Santa said, "There were lots of good boys and girls this year. That means lots of presents." He laughed and said, "Beth, next year we may have to get a bigger sleigh."
Page 14
The reindeer said, "Beth is a good sleigh driver, Santa!" Santa smiled and said, "Maybe she can help us next year." "You bet!" said Beth. "I love to drive the sleigh."
Page 15
Santa's bag was empty. Just in time, too. It was nearly sunup. "Beth, it's time to go home," said Santa. Beth led the reindeer back across the ocean toward Austin.
Page 16
They landed in the yard. The sun was just coming up. Santa dug deep into his sack for one last present. As he was leaving, Santa said, "Beth, we never would have made it without you."
Page 17
Beth climbed in her window and said, "Goodbye, Santa. This is our little secret." Sam, Bryce and Benjamin knocked on the door and asked, "Beth, who are you talking to?"
Page 18
"Oh, no one, I must have been dreaming." The sound of jingling bells meant the sleigh was taking off for the North Pole. Near the window was a present with a note:
To my Secret Helper,
Beth, the reindeer and I will never forget how you helped us. See you next Christmas!
Your friend Santa
