Bryce Vogel had lots of birthday cards. One of the cards said, "I want to wish you a Happy Birthday!" But, strangely, the card was signed, "MR. UN-HAPPY." "That is sad," Bryce said to Sam and Benjamin. "I wonder why he is un-happy?"

Bryce could not quit thinking about MR. UN-HAPPY's card. "If I knew who MR. UN-HAPPY was, maybe I could help him."

The phone rang. It was the Chief of Police. "Bryce, would you help us solve a mystery?" he asked. "Someone is sending birthday cards and signing them, MR. UN-HAPPY." "I know," said Bryce. "I just got mine. I will be glad to help," he added.

All over town, kids having birthday parties felt sad for MR. UN-HAPPY.
Page 7
Someone had been sneaking up to mailboxes and putting in happy birthday cards signed, "MR. UN-HAPPY," for weeks. Bryce thought, "That person must really be un-happy."
Page 8
Bryce said to Sam and Benjamin, "This has got to stop. I want MR. UN-HAPPY to be happy and so do all the other kids in Lago Vista." He put on his detective's coat and hat and went out to look for clues.

Bryce saw a small shadow down the street. When the shadow saw Bryce it dropped something on the ground. Then it ran off. Bryce picked it up. Guess what it was - a birthday card signed, "MR. UN-HAPPY!"
Page 10
"Well, that shadow had to be MR. UN-HAPPY himself;" Bryce thought. It was too bad that he got away. How was anyone going to find out who he was?
Page 11
Then Bryce had an idea. He went home and told Sam and Benjamin, "Since we do not know who MR. UN-HAPPY is, let's put an invitation in all the mailboxes in Lago Vista and invite him to my birthday party."

Bryce and Sam and Benjamin went to work on the cards. This is what they wrote:

There was only a small chance that the plan would work, but Bryce thought it was worth a try. After all, the Chief of Police had asked Bryce for help. This was a tough case to solve.

When it was time for the birthday party Bryce greeted his friends at the door. There was one girl he did not know. "What is your name?" asked Bryce. Tears ran down the girl's face. "I'm so sorry," said the girl. "I'm MR. UN-HAPPY," she sobbed.
Page 15
Bryce asked, "Why did you give everyone birthday cards signed, 'MR. UN-HAPPY?' We all felt sad for you." "I know," she cried, "but no one ever invited me to their birthday party until today. I was unhappy because I never got to go to a birthday party."
Page 16
The Chief of Police drove up in his police car. He had come to see if MR. UN-HAPPY would show up at the party.
Page 17
Bryce said, "Chief, I solved the mystery. Meet MR. UN-HAPPY." "Do you mean HE is a SHE?" he asked. "That's right," said the girl. "Bryce invited me to his party and I am so happy, I'll never make anyone unhappy again." "Good work, Bryce," said the Chief "You really helped us."

Bryce smiled and thought that was about the best birthday party anybody ever had. The case of MR. UN-HAPPY was over. All over Lago Vista, birthdays could be happy again.
