Samantha received a pink envelope with her name on it: Samantha Vogel. Inside, an invitation said: Tonight the Lago Vista Children's Ballet presents the Parade of Flowers with the Ballerina Princess. Please attend! Samantha invited Shelby, Steffanie and Charis to come, too.

That night they sat on the front row behind the orchestra. Samantha saw the heavy velvet curtain with thick gold ropes. They listened to the orchestra musicians tune their instruments. But they did not see the Ballerina Princess.

Page 5

Samantha's heart raced as the director walked across the stage. "We have a problem," he sighed. "The Ballerina Princess has a sprained ankle." "Oh, no," the audience moaned. Samantha wondered if she could help.

Page 6

Samantha had practiced this ballet many times and had always dreamed of dancing for an audience. Maybe, just maybe, this could be her chance. So, with that thought, Samantha went up the stairs to the green dressing room where the dancers were. She was looking for the Ballerina Princess.

Samantha walked to the dressing room and knocked softly on the door. A tearful voice said, "Come in." The ballerina sat on a costume trunk. Tears were in her eyes. "I twisted my ankle," she cried; "I guess the ballet will be cancelled." The director nodded his head sadly.

The director suddenly asked Samantha, "Can you dance?" "Yes," she said. "Then maybe you could take her place." The ballerina nodded and said, "Hurry and get dressed." Samantha slipped on a pink tutu and satin slippers that fit perfectly. She already knew exactly what to do.

Samantha took a deep breath and walked to the center of the stage. "I know I can do this," Samantha said to herself. She held a magic wand and wore a golden crown. She bent over, pretending to be a tiny flower that was sleeping.

Page 10

The lights brightened, the orchestra played and the velvet curtain opened slowly. Samantha opened her eyes and stretched her arms like a flower blooming. She saw the many, many faces of the audience - - - all watching her!

Page 11

Samantha thought, "I must remember to hold my chin up and point my toes." She saw the orchestra conductor smile and wink at her as she spun like a top in a perfect pirouette.

Page 12

Samantha tiptoed over to the sleeping flowers and touched each one with her magic wand. The sunflowers and pansies and violets awoke and circled her on the stage.

Page 13

A little bunny hopped and danced with Samantha between the flowers. The bunny did little hops. She jumped in a graceful leap called a jete. Samantha was careful not to step on the bunny's toes.

Page 14

Butterflies whirled and twirled around Samantha. They were all colors of blues and yellows and pinks. Samantha remembered to point her toes as she swung one leg back and stretched her arms.

Page 15

The butterflies swept Samantha to the sparkling throne. The stage lights made it look as if it were covered with millions of tiny diamonds. Samantha sat on the soft, petal cushions. She felt like a real Ballerina Princess.

Page 16

Before Samantha knew it, the performance was over. The audience clapped and cheered. She curtsied and curtsied. The audience cheered even louder.

Page 17

Shelby, Steffanie and Charis called from the audience, "Hooray, Samantha!" The director brought her a bouquet of tiny rosebuds. "We are so proud of you, Samantha!" he said. "You saved our ballet."

Page 18

Everyone in the performance gathered around Samantha backstage. "You are a wonderful Ballerina Princess," they said. The director asked, "Would you please come and dance with us again?" "I will." Samantha said. "I'm always glad to help." As Samantha turned to leave, she thought, "I really could be a Ballerina Princess if I tried."
